Educational Therapy and Mindfulness Services for Diverse Learners and Their Families
Using educational therapy, I work with families and students to understand how learning impacts the student in school and at home. I commonly work with students with reading disorders, dyslexia, executive functioning challenges, attention issues, ADHD, processing issues, and students who need additional support. We work together to strengthen their skills so that they can be more available for learning without the level of struggle they currently face.
I take a personalized, strengths-based approach to leverage students' abilities, foster a growth mindset, teach students about how their brain works, and empower them to be their own advocate. I introduce students to mindfulness and help them figure out who they are as learners.
I collaborate with the family, outside professionals, and the school, as appropriate. I primarily work with students at the upper elementary school level through college level and meet one-on-one with students at my office, online, or in their homes.
The emotional state of parents is a powerful influence on both children and partners, and parents of struggling learners often feel overwhelmed, under-resourced, and uncertain as to how best to support their children. Mindfulness, or maintaining awareness of what you’re sensing and feeling in the present moment, can help reduce the experience of stress so that you can stay calm, engaged, and available to deal with the challenge at hand.
Based on your needs and those of your family, I teach the foundations of mindfulness and self-compassion, and support you as you create and maintain your own regular practice of these tools. I teach parents how to leverage mindfulness practices for communication and parenting, so that you can better show up for your child, your family, and yourself in the midst of difficult situations. Doing your own emotional work in concert with your child’s educational therapy can help your family to craft an integrative approach to tackling the challenges of learning differences.
"Data shows that the greatest source of childhood and adolescent stress is not schoolwork, extracurricular activities, or peer pressure but parental stress."

I have worked in the field of education for over twenty-five years. My experience encompasses a variety of school and clinical settings from the NPS Summit View, to the private college prep school Campbell Hall, as well as public and parochial schools. I now have a private educational therapist practice, am an educational consultant, and mindfulness teacher.
My educational background is in Special Education, where I hold a Masters degree and two teaching credentials, one in special education grades K-12 and the second in general education grades K-6. Additionally, I am a mindfulness meditation instructor, having received my training at the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Behavior at UCLA.
Kathryn helped me power through a tough semester in college. I needed help with project management and reading skills, so we worked on finding and applying certain strategies that worked for me. Kathryn also gave me tools to mitigate my perfectionism, like grounding techniques and recommendations for how long I should work on my assignments. I’ll keep using these skills so I can prioritize my health through my final school year.
Skyler - Student
I have worked with Kathryn for over twenty years and have the greatest respect for her work with students, parents and schools. As someone who has worked in a variety of school settings, Kathryn has an excellent understanding of the school environment and what supports a school is able to provide as well as what a student needs to be successful. Kathryn has taught a neurodevelopmental teacher training program for many years and her deep understanding of each student’s unique neurocognitive profile allows her to individually tailor her educational therapy for each student. She is a strength based practitioner and is always looking to help students understand their own strengths and capabilities. Kathryn’s training and practice in mindfulness adds a unique component to her educational therapy practice. She is able to give students a broader perspective and to help them to use their tools both inside and outside of the classroom.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Kathryn for over 20 years in personal and professional settings. Kathryn is an exceptional educational therapist who is trained in a variety of research-based instructional methods and uniquely specializes in mindfulness meditation. As a fellow educational therapist, I have been the beneficiary of a training session in which Kathryn taught mindfulness approaches to utilize during individualized educational therapy sessions. In addition, I am grateful for Kathryn's work with my teenage daughter that greatly improved her confidence and encouraged her to use mindfulness techniques to support executive functioning skills. I whole-heartedly recommend Kathryn's educational therapy services to a wide variety of learners.
